Understanding your options

Three ways your NDIS funding can be managed

There are different ways to manage the funding in your NDIS plan.

The option you use affects who pays your providers, how invoices are managed and which providers you can choose.

Your plan may be self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed. You may also use a combination of these.

1. Self-managed

You manage your NDIS funding yourself.

This can give you more choice over the providers you use, but it also means taking care of things like invoices, payments and keeping records.

✔ You choose and pay your providers
✔ You keep track of your spending
✔ You keep the records you need

2. Plan-managed

A Plan Manager helps manage the financial side of your NDIS plan.

They can pay providers, process invoices and help you keep track of your funding.

✔ Your Plan Manager pays provider invoices
✔ They help keep track of your spending
✔ You can use registered and unregistered providers, subject to NDIS rules

3. NDIA-managed

The NDIS manages your NDIS funding for you.

The NDIA manages the funding for you and pays providers directly.
If your funding is NDIA-managed, you generally use NDIS-registered providers for those supports.
✔ Providers claim directly from the NDIA
✔ You don’t need to process provider invoices yourself
✔ You choose from registered NDIS providers

Which option is right for me?

There isn’t one option that’s right for everyone.

Think about how involved you want to be in managing payments and records, the providers you want to use and how much help you’d like with the financial side of your plan.

If you’re not sure, there are people who can help explain your options.
