Q&A with Yvonne Alaimo
Client and Family Engagement Officer
My daughter Sophie spends three days a week at Sages Cottage and loves it. I’ve always been interested in accommodation, especially knowing that one day we’ll need to support Sophie to live somewhere safe and warm, surrounded by people who care about her. As a family, we won’t be able to do it forever, so this role really matters to me.
Working with families who are on the same path. It’s a big journey, sometimes overwhelming, but it’s also full of possibility. I love being able to say, “you’re not alone.”
Start the conversation early. It can take time, and the more prepared you are, the more choice and support you’ll have. There are some great opportunities out there – don’t wait until you’re in crisis to explore them.
It’s trust. The hardest question is often, “Who’s going to care for my young adult like we do?” And I get that; I’ve asked it myself. I always say: be honest, ask questions and get the process started before you really need to. That way, your loved one can be settled and supported when the time comes.
The pamper day at Sages was beautiful. The clients absolutely loved being looked after and celebrated. It’s those little things that show how powerful a warm, inclusive environment can be.
Making sure the space feels personal, with items that matter to them. It could be a favourite pillow, photos, or something from their bedroom at home. Those touches make all the difference.
