Laurence’s journey shows what’s possible when determination meets the right support and an inclusive employer. In January 2025, after more than a decade in Supported Employment, Laurence made the transition to Open Employment, working 3 days a week at construction equipment supplier, Tutt Bryant Group.
Earning full award wages, Laurence has a growing sense of belonging, has connected with his colleagues and is making a meaningful contribution in his role.
“I enjoy the work and being part of the team. It feels good to be out in the community and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved,” Laurence said.
A pathway built around choice and growth
Laurence’s transition was carefully paced. In April 2023, he began with one Open Employment day a week, gradually reducing his time in Wallara’s warehouse. By early 2024, he had added more days, settling into a hybrid routine of 3 days in Open Employment and one at Wallara, before moving exclusively to Tutt Bryant Group.
This balanced approach gave Laurence time to become more confident, gain new skills and be workplace ready.
His employer noticed his dedication.
“One of the main bosses I work with said he was impressed that more people from Wallara are giving Open Employment a go,” Laurence reflected.
Support, partnership and purpose
Wallara’s Open Employment program supports people with disability to explore and succeed in community-based roles. It offers coaching, tailored trials, onboarding assistance and regular check-ins – all aligned with individual goals, interests and pace.
Carolyn Bloch, Wallara’s Senior Open Employment Advisor, sums up the philosophy.
“We create a tailored support plan before any commitment is made and provide ongoing assistance throughout the process. It’s about honesty, transparency and making sure the match is right.”
“Watching people achieve things they didn’t think they could and seeing someone’s confidence grow through work is incredibly rewarding.”
Carolyn works closely with participants and employers from the very beginning – listening to concerns, guiding expectations and ensuring each match is supportive and sustainable.
