Mitch has always lived at home with his family and attends Sages Cottage Farm day programs. The Wallara experience has given him and his family confidence in his ability to spread his wings, become more independent and explore life on his own.
The next step for Mitch was a planned stay at Wallara’s Short-Term Accommodation home – a 5-bedroom home, The Beach House, where Mitch would feel safe, supported in a warm and welcoming environment, make friends, explore a new community and build life skills through everyday experiences.
Arrangements were made for Mitch to be picked up from Sages on a Friday afternoon by his Support Coach and he was super excited. When he arrived at the home, Mitch was able to choose his own room and enthusiastically unpack his bags. Staff explained the activities that were planned as well as preparing the menu for the stay. Mitch and housemate Billy selected food and drinks that they wanted and received help to place an online grocery order. When the shopping delivery arrived, Mitch and Billy cut up vegetables, including broccoli, mushrooms, onions and carrots.
After dinner, both Mitch and Billy helped with the dishes and then prepared for an evening in to watch the AFL on TV, something they are both passionate about. The two gentlemen also enjoyed games of UNO and billiards, before deciding to call it a night.
The next day was full of adventure with community activities arranged to assist with the growth of independent living skills. The two gentlemen were involved in choosing their clubs for a golf session, communicating directly with retail staff before choosing their favourite burger from the lunch menu.
For Mitch, a stay at The Beach Houe was the first step in his journey to independent living.

– Janiece, Mitch’s mum.“Mitch’s stay at Bonbeach made him so happy and proud. He loved being able to play games, interact with others, take part in the organised activities and help cook meals. For us, it was so uplifting to see him thrive in a new environment, learning about teamwork, making new friends and following instructions,”
Mitch“I had a great time cooking, watching Mr Bean, and the Sydney and Doggies match, and I really want to go back again.”
